Triathlon for Beginners: How to Get Started

2 Min. Read Time
Swimming, cycling, running — three disciplines, one goal. Triathlon sounds extreme, but with the right preparation, it’s achievable even for beginners.
The Essentials at a Glance
- Sprint distance (750m/20km/5km) is ideal for getting started
- A 12-week training plan is sufficient for the first sprint distance
- Learning to front crawl is the biggest hurdle — a swimming course is worth it
- Practice the transition zone: T1 and T2 cost beginners the most time
- Wetsuit is mandatory at water temperatures below 20°C
Why Triathlon Works for Non-Professionals Too
The sprint distance — 750 meters swimming, 20 kilometers cycling, 5 kilometers running — can be realistically prepared for in 12 weeks. The beauty of triathlon: weaknesses in one discipline can be compensated by strengths in others. If you’re a good runner, you don’t have to be a swimming ace.
Most beginners underestimate the transition zone. T1 (swimming → cycling) and T2 (cycling → running) should be practiced at least three times. Removing the wetsuit, putting on the helmet, and lacing up shoes — under stress, it feels different than at home. Tip: Lay everything out on a towel, establish a routine, and automate it.
Training Plan: 12 Weeks to the First Triathlon
A sensible plan distributes 4–5 training sessions per week across the three disciplines. Swimming twice (including one technique session), cycling twice, running twice — with one rest day. In the first four weeks, it’s all about building basic endurance; from week 5 onwards, combined training sessions (cycling + running directly one after the other) are added.
The most common mistakes: Too much too soon, too little swimming training, and no combined units. Anyone who trains consistently for three months will finish their first sprint triathlon — guaranteed.
Equipment: What You Really Need
For getting started, a normal road bike or even a good touring bike, swimming goggles, and running shoes are sufficient. Time trial bikes and aero helmets are for professionals — not for the first race. The wetsuit is the only significant investment (from 100 Euro used) and is mandatory at most events with water temperatures below 20°C.
A triathlon suit (one-piece) is practical but not necessary: Cycling shorts under the wetsuit work just as well. More important than expensive equipment: Practice, practice, practice.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to complete a sprint triathlon as a beginner?
Most beginners finish a sprint triathlon in 1:30 to 2:00 hours. With 12 weeks of preparation, this is achievable.
Do you need to know how to front crawl for a triathlon?
Not necessarily — breaststroke is allowed. However, front crawl is significantly faster and more energy-efficient. Taking a swimming course before training is worthwhile.
What is the cost of getting started with triathlon?
Entry fee (50–80 Euro), wetsuit (100–200 Euro second-hand), swimming goggles (20 Euro). You often already have a bike and running shoes. Total: 200–400 Euro to get started.
