The tennis calendar has another team competition: between 3 and 12 January 2020, the ATP Cup will be held for the first time in Australia. In three different cities, players will be able to swing their tennis rackets and play for 15 million dollars. Now it is clear where the winner can be cheered, because the final matches will take place in Sydney.

Successor of the World Team Cup

The ATP Cup is considered the successor of the World Team Cup, which was the World Team Championship and was held between 1978 and 2012 in Düsseldorf. A few weeks after the premiere of the Davis Cup Finals and in the run-up to the Australian Open in Melbourne, the ten-day tournament will take place.

Federations battle for power

The general conditions are practically identical to those of the Davis Cup. The two team-competitions are also not far apart in terms of time. The ATP has been criticised because the International Tennis Federation (ITF) is organising a very similar tournament of superlatives in Madrid in 2019, the Davis Cup, a tournament of the best 18 nations, with prize money of 20 million US dollars.

The tournament

The teams are divided into six different groups. In group matches with four teams each and a subsequent final round, two singles and one double over two winning sets are played per match. The group phase is followed by quarter-finals, half-finals and finals. The games will take place in the three Australian cities of Brisbane, Sydney and Perth.

A chance for success

The participants should make an effort, because the tournament is endowed with 15 million dollars prize money. Players can also earn up to 750 world ranking points.

Statement

Now, at the end of 2019 and beginning of 2020, two practically identical competitions will take place within six weeks. But the players are always happy about the opportunity to win world ranking points despite the busy schedule.
