Winter Golf – in the „Deichgrafen“ style

HARD DRIVE
Golfen auf dem Deichgrafenhof

LEVEL: BEGINNER – PROFESSIONAL

The temperature went down to minus 5 degrees. A white and cold coat surrounds the golf course and the early darkness is omnipresent. Winter arrived and the normally green and welcoming golf course doesn’t seem to be a place to go to during these dark winter months. One would not believe people do really think about playing golf at this time of the year. But the golf course „Deichgrafenhof“ in Tating proves us we are quite wrong with our assumption.

A tough company group from Hamburg was looking for some variety during their daily business seminars in St. Peter-Ording – the „Deichgrafenhof“ course just openend their brand new golfing range at the same time and immediately aroused their interest. The golf course was initially closed during the cold winter months, but Head-Pro Neil and C-Trainer Mo were amazed by the interest of the businessmen from Hamburg and thought about supporting their idea and therefore opened up the range.

„The coldest lessons I gave was at a temperature of minus 6 degrees, so actually there is still everything possible“, said Neil in an interview afterwards with his typical english humour.

After the first introduction in the heated club house Egan’s Pub it was finally time to start with the hardcore – beginners course, outside on the ice-cold range. Dressed up with warm winterjackets, winter boots and golf rackets, they were ready for some „sports fun“.

The demonstration of the optimal „Schlag“ was quickly shown as no one could stand still without moving around during these temperatures. The golf sessions started and after a while the almost 20 guys were so busy with developing their new skills that they seemed to forget the minus degrees and the cold winter air that surrounded them.

As the darkness was all over the golf course, the group finally came back to the club house. With warm drinks and a Pub-Quiz they celebrated their golf day and left the course by dropping that they are keen on  coming back next summer.

In summer, the public golf course Deichgrafenhof attracts especially golfers without a green fee or club membership. And of course the welcoming and green course during the warm summer months is something one should not miss.

STATEMENT

Playing golf during these different and unusual conditions can be a lot of fun but only if you face it with the right expectations. Our personal advise: Do the beginners course in saison, it is just more fun!

BEFORE

In winter you should check exactly how the local conditions are and adjust your clothes. Keep calm and not expect too much, because freezing temperatures make the sport even more difficult than it already is. Many clubs close their training facilities and courses in winter or apply certain winter rules, so just ask before how the situation is on the golf course.

EXPERT EXPERIENCE

It was my first course in snow and even if it was really icy, it was totally fun. The aim was to give everyone the chance to give an insight into the sport and to convey the joy of golf. Despite minus 5 degrees some were hooked and that’s always great.

CHALLENGE

The challenge at minus 5 degrees? Be careful that you do not freeze, that was really all… :-)
