Le Mans Playbook: How Race Drivers Build Endurance

In the cockpit of a hypercar, the heart beats at an average of 130 times per minute. Three hours at a time, at 40 degrees Celsius, with helmet, Hans system, and fireproof suit. This is not a curiosity; it is a trained skill – and that’s exactly why it’s worth taking a look. If you want to run a half marathon in ten weeks and don’t know how to simultaneously increase endurance, heat tolerance, and mental stability, you have a proven playbook in the Le Mans endurance cockpit. You just need to copy it.
What 24 Hours of Le Mans Really Demands from the Body
Three to four stints, each lasting two to three hours. In between, sleep in a box that never gets quiet. In the cockpit, the thermometer shows values between 35 and 40 degrees, the helmet weighs one and a half kilos, and the lateral acceleration in the Tertre Rouge curve is more than four G. According to data from the manufacturer teams, the average pulse of a driver during the race is around 130 beats per minute, rising to 160 during braking phases. This is the strain of a constant tempo run, except you’re also keeping a machine with nearly 700 PS at its limit.
What you can take away from this has nothing to do with the steering wheel and gear selection. It’s about the question of how a body can perform over hours without crashing in the last 30 minutes. This is the same question you ask yourself during a marathon, a trail run, or a long day of cycling in the Alps.
The five training components from the Le Mans playbook
When you look at the training plans of works drivers like Harry Tincknell or Sébastien Buemi, five elements keep recurring. No magic, no secret training. What counts is the sequence and the consistency with which each block is completed.
Sustain-Cardio: 60 minutes continuously, three times a week
Cycling or running, pulse at 70 to 75 percent of the maximum heart rate, no intervals. This exact zone simulates the stint character of the race. For you, this means: a long run on the weekend plus two moderate sessions during the week, without overloading yourself with tempo training.
Heat Adaptation: two short sessions per week
Toyota Gazoo Racing sends its drivers into heated rooms at 35 degrees. You don’t need a climate room: 20 minutes of easy treadmill running with long pants and a sweater is enough to increase plasma volume and accelerate the sweat response. Anyone who completes four such sessions in May will not be the one who collapses at 28 degrees in early July.
Neck and Core Stability: 15 minutes per day
In the cockpit, the driver keeps the helmet stable against 4G. When running, you keep your head steady over hundreds of thousands of steps. Plank variations, side bridges, dead bugs, and controlled neck isometrics two to three times a week – this is not an addition, it is a prerequisite to ensure that your breathing does not collapse after kilometer 15.
Stints Mental Training: think of long distances in stages
Drivers never think about 24 hours, but about the next pit stop. Apply this to the half marathon: don’t plan the 21 kilometers, but the next supply point. Three stints of seven kilometers each feels different from one block. Sounds trivial, but it is the most reliable method to prevent mental breakdowns in the latter part of the race.
Train sleep fragmentation – but sparingly
Le Mans drivers practice short, hard naps between stints. This is excessive for hobbyists, but the idea behind it is gold: learn to wind down in 20 minutes. A guided breathing meditation or a consistent power nap reflex helps more on race day than an extra tempo run in week eight.

What you can adopt and what you can skip
There comes a point where the analogy between a racing driver and a hobby runner ends. You don’t need 4G capability, a HANS system, or a strength trainer prescribing helmet-holding exercises. But the logic of the load structure is directly transferable – and, to be honest, surprisingly easy to implement.
- Three long sustain units per week
- Deliberate heat sessions in the spring
- Daily neck and core mini-routine
- Stage thinking instead of total distance
- Sleep reset as a training component
- Volume obsession beyond ten hours per week
- Reaction training with light systems
- Specific G-force neck protocols
- Carbohydrate gels in every run
- Race simulator before every half marathon
The exciting thing about this list is what’s not on it. None of the components cost money, none require special equipment, and none demand fifteen hours per week. Three cardio units, two heat sessions, five core workouts per week, plus consistent sleep hygiene – that’s eight to nine hours of training per week and an effect that you will noticeably feel in your pulse and overall sensation after three to four weeks.
I tried this myself because I couldn’t believe that a twenty-minute sweatbox session with a sweater on the treadmill would do anything. It does. After three weeks, my pulse during my standard tempo run at a warm 26 degrees was five beats lower than before.
