HAMATA – The flat water kite spot

SPOTLIGHT
Hamata

Flat and shallow water is what every freestyle kitesurfer dreams of. Hamata, which is located in the south of Egypt offers great conditions for kitesurfing and is easy to reach.

Super flat and shallow water but still strong wind? Sounds like paradise – and we found it! Hamata  offers fantastic conditions. I went to the kite-village in Hamata and although they experience a tourism boom at the moment, it is still one of my favorite spots to go for a quick ride or practise freestyle tricks.

The kite-village is approximately 7 kilometres north of the Wadi Lahmy Azur Resort. The spot offers a 1 x 2 kilometre big standing area, with warm, turquoise blue water and an extraordinary view of the green mangrove forests. A rather rare sight for the red sea.

The spot is not only an ideal place for beginners, but also freestyle freaks will be happy with the great conditions to make fast progress. The beach boys who work at the kitestation will be happy to help out in the start and landing zones. This does not only sound bright and promising, but also ensures a controlled process in this section of the water sport.

Another highlight: the two islands off the coast, that you can reach in only 10 minutes with your kite. At this point: make sure you spoke to the kite center beforehand. Trespassing the islands is strictly forbidden, as they belong to a protected nature reserve. From 11.-13.03.2016 the annual very popular Seamen Race takes place. Don’t miss it! At the same time you have the chance to test brand new stuff from different kite brands at the kite testival (09.-14.03.16).

Hint: From September to June you will find optimal wind conditions. Furthermore, it is recommendable to visit Hamata in the off-season. You can find further information regarding the wind statistics on Wisuki.

STATEMENT

Personally, Hamata is one of the best shallow water kitesurf spots I know. Since this spot is well known amongst kitesurfers, it is not really an insider tip anymore.

However, a great experience you should definitely not miss!

JOURNEY

Departing in Munich, it is only a 4,5 hours flight to  Marsa Alam, located in the south of Egypt. From there you can take the bus through the desert to Hamata. The busride normally takes about 2,5 hours. In general these buses have enough space for all your water sports equipment. From your accomodation in Hamata it is only a 10 minute bus drive to the beach and the magic kitespots. There are periodic shuttlebuses that drive between the hotel and the Kite-Village (3 € per day).

ACCOMMODATION

Nearby the kite village you will find a number of 4 Star Hotels that are connected to the station via the shuttle bus. During our vacation, we stayed in the 4 Star Hotel Wadi Lahmy.

The rooms are not comparable to european standard. However, they are clean and furnished very well. There will be a great buffet every day, offering something for everyone.

ALTERNATIVES

It is certainly possible, that there is going to be no wind in Hamata. Luckily the village offers quite a lot of other activities, so you won’t get bored. From snorkeling to quadbiking – there’s something for everyone. On top of that, don’t forget to bring a good book.
