It is the sporting event of the year: The European Championships 2022 in Munich. From August 11 to 21, the Bavarian capital will be the venue for competitions in disciplines and thus make the hearts of many sports enthusiasts beat faster.

Since the 1972 Olympic Games, the city of Munich is hosting one of the biggest sporting events with the European Championships. Europe’s best athletes gather in Munich in mid-August to compete for medals in their respective sports. In total, the sports represented are beach volleyball, triathlon, canoe racing, climbing, rowing, athletics, cycling, table tennis and gymnastics. In this article we tell you which highlights you can look forward to.

Venues of the competitions

The center of the event is the Munich Olympic Park. The park is a popular destination for many Munich residents – whether for sports or for other walkers. Among other things, the legendary Summer Tollwood and many concerts take place here. The Olympic Stadium is always the center of attention. Also during the European Championships it is the Main Stage for some sports as well as the medal ceremony.

For the triathletes, canoeists and rowers, it’s off to Oberschleißheim for the rowing regatta. The area is located in the north of Munich and has a surface area of 850,000 square meters. The regatta course itself is a remarkable 2.23 kilometers long and 140 meters wide. With a total of 8 lanes, there is thus enough space for rowing races and swimming competitions. The people of Munich also appreciate the facility outside of competitive sports, as it offers good opportunities for intensive sunbathing and recreational sports.

But other squares in Munich are also converted into sports facilities without further ado. Königsplatz, for example, hosts beach volleyball players and climbers, while the old town becomes a marathon course.

Watchlist – Who are the favorites?

In rowing, the German eight goes into the race as the clear favorite. The team’s goal is to win the gold medal in front of its home crowd. Climbing has been an Olympic discipline since the Tokyo Olympics. Reason enough to take a closer look at it during the European Championships. The big favorites here are the German Alexander Megos and the Czech Adam Ondra. In the women’s competition, Slovenia’s Janja Garnbret is considered unbeatable.

In athletics, the two German runners Gesa Krause and Konstanze Klosterhalfen are hoping for a medal in their disciplines. In gymnastics, Marcel Nguyen wants to return to his best performance. The gymnast previously had to take a break for a year due to an injury. In Munich, he wants to show that he rises from the ashes like the Phoenix.

In swimming, too, there is hope again for the German Swimming Association. And it goes by the name of Florian Wellbrock. The 24-year-old recently put in a remarkable performance at the World Swimming Championships in Budapest, winning five medals. His colleagues Lukas Märtens and Anna Elendt are also in good shape for the European Championships with a silver medal each.

The European Championships 2022 are not to be missed. During one and a half weeks there will be a lot of sporting highlights and it has never been so easy to get access to different disciplines.
