Wing Foiling at Lake Starnberg: Munich’s Hidden Gem
I never thought my best foiling experience wouldn’t be at the sea but 30 minutes from Munich. Lake Starnberg is a insider tip for Wing Foilers — and since I discovered the spot, I’m there at least twice a week.
Why Lake Starnberg?
The lake benefits from a reliable thermal wind that sets in around 12-1 pm and lasts until late afternoon. 12-18 knots are standard on good days — perfect for Wing Foiling. The lake is large enough (21 km long) that the area is well distributed, and the water is clean enough to swim in when you need to.
The best entry points
My favorite spot is Ambach on the eastern shore — good entry, few bathers, and the wind usually arrives clean here. Percha also works well, but has a bit more crowd. Important: Wing Foiling is not allowed at official bathing areas, but there are plenty of free shoreline areas.
Wing Foiling vs. Kite Foiling
I do both, and Wing Foiling has clear advantages on inland lakes: No complicated kite setup, no helper needed to start, no long lines that endanger others. You simply go into the water with board and wing and get started. The downside: In gusts, you have less control than with a kite, and in really strong winds (over 25 knots), it becomes strenuous with the wing.
My setup
I ride a 5m wing (for 12-20 knots) and a 90-liter foilboard with a 1350 cm² front wing. On windy days, I switch to the 4m wing. Neoprene depending on the season — the water on Lake Starnberg is fresh even in summer (max. 23°C), I always wear a helmet and impact vest.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need kite experience for Wing Foiling?
No, you can learn Wing Foiling without kite experience. Board experience (surfing, SUP, wakeboarding) helps enormously, though. The wing is more intuitive than a kite — you simply hold it into the wind and generate traction. The biggest challenge is foiling itself, not the wing.
Is Wing Foiling allowed on the lake?
On Lake Starnberg, basically yes, but not at designated bathing areas. You should keep a distance from swimmers and sailors. If in doubt: the Starnberg district office has current information on water sports regulations on the lake.
What does it cost to get into Wing Foiling?
A complete setup (wing, board, foil) costs around 2,500-4,000 EUR new. Used, you can get decent gear from around 1,500 EUR. Courses cost 200-400 EUR for 2-3 days. Compared to kitesurfing, you save the kite course (600-900 EUR) and get on the water faster.
