Skateboarding 2025: From Trend Back to the Streets

2 Min. Read
Skateboarding is art, sport, and subculture rolled into one. Post-Olympics, the scene is returning to its roots — the streets.
The Essentials
- The Olympics made skateboarding accessible to a mass audience
- The scene stays authentic: street skating remains the core
- Get started from 80 Euros (complete board) — no expensive equipment needed
- Skateparks are booming: over 1,000 parks and spots in Germany
- Key basic tricks: Ollie, Kickflip, 50-50 Grind
Skateboarding Post-Olympics
The 2021 Tokyo and 2024 Paris Olympics put skateboarding on the global stage. The result: more skateparks, more beginners, more media attention. But the core scene remains skeptical — skateboarding as an Olympic discipline with judges contradicts the sport’s DIY spirit.
What remains: a new generation that discovered skateboarding through the Olympics and is now hitting the streets. Street skating — stairs, curbs, handrails — is and will always be the heart of skate culture. No points, no rules, just you and the spot.
Beginner’s Guide: Board, Shoes, First Tricks
Board: Complete board from Globe, Toy Machine, or Element for 80–120 Euros. Deck width of 8.0″ to 8.25″ is standard. Avoid supermarket boards — they don’t roll well and break easily.
Shoes: Flat skate shoes with a rubber sole: Vans Old Skool, Nike SB Dunk Low, Adidas Busenitz. Running shoes are unsuitable — no board feel, too soft.
First Tricks: Learn to ride and brake (drag your foot). Then Tic-Tacs (steering through weight shifting). Next: Ollie — THE fundamental skateboarding trick. Mastering a clean Ollie takes 2–6 weeks with daily practice.
The Best Skateparks in Germany
Hirschgarten Munich: Huge park with bowls, rails, and a street section. One of the best in southern Germany.
Skatehalle Berlin (Friedrichshain): Indoor park with a perfect riding surface. The go-to spot for Berlin’s skate scene during winter.
Stapelbäddsparken Malmö: Okay, Sweden, not Germany — but just an hour by train from Hamburg and one of Europe’s best skateparks. Worth the trip.
Lingnerallee Dresden: A surprisingly good park with a flow section and street area. Eastern Germany’s skate scene is growing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 30 too old to start skating?
Absolutely not. Most skateparks today have a diverse age mix. Protective gear (knee, elbow, and wrist pads) reduces fear of falls and cuts down on recovery time.
How long does it take to learn an ollie?
With daily practice, 2–6 weeks for a solid stationary ollie. Another 2–4 weeks to master it while rolling. Patience is key — every skater has spent months perfecting their ollie.
Skateboard or longboard — which is better for beginners?
For tricks: skateboard. For cruising and commuting: longboard. Most riders choose their path after a few sessions. Doing both at once is possible but uncommon.
