Pronation: what your foot does on impact

The drop describes the height difference between heel and forefoot. A classic training shoe has 8 to 12 millimetres, minimalist models sit at 0 to 4. This number sounds small, but it changes how your foot strikes the ground.

A high drop favours heel-striking and relieves the calf and Achilles tendon. A low drop encourages a midfoot or forefoot strike and, in return, places greater demand on the calf and tendons. Both are legitimate, but switching requires practice.

The most important advice: never change the drop abruptly. If you jump from 10 to 4 millimetres, you risk Achilles problems because the tendon suddenly has to work much harder. Reduce the drop in small steps over weeks, just as cautiously as when building up long runs.

Cushioning vs. stability: the fundamental question

The most heated debate among runners revolves around cushioning. Maximalist shoes with thick soles have been trending for years, yet more material isn’t automatically better. It all depends on what and where you run.

Plenty of cushioning protects on long, slow runs and hard asphalt. It does, however, cost you ground feel and responsiveness, and very soft midsoles can reduce stability. Minimal cushioning gives you control and a direct running sensation but places greater strain on foot and calf.

High cushioning

Pros: comfort on long miles, joint-friendly on asphalt, ideal for beginners and heavier runners.

Cons: less ground feel, sluggish tempo, soft midsoles can wobble.

Low cushioning

Pros: direct running feel, more control, strengthens foot muscles, light and responsive.

Cons: harder on joints and tendons, transition takes time, less buffer on long distances.

The best shoe is useless if it doesn’t fit. Always buy running shoes in the late afternoon when feet are slightly swollen and leave a thumb’s width of space at the front. Feet expand while running; a tight shoe leads to black toenails and blisters.
