After the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon, the US Open now follows as the fourth and last Grand Slam tournament of the year. During the period from August 26th to September 8th Williams & Co. can prove their tennis skills. The matches are traditionally played at the Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York. The IBS editorial staff can’t wait to see the 128 participants play and will give you a detailed overview of the famous tennis tournament here.

Facts about the US Open

In 1881 the tennis tournament was held for the first time, only as a men’s competition. In 1887 the women’s competition was played for the first time. The first competitions did not take place in New York, but in Newport and Philadelphia. It was not until 1978 that the tournament moved into the Jean King National Tennis Center, which has two stadiums. The part of the name “open” is intended to show that the event is open to all participants, regardless of their status, gender or age.

When and where will the tournament be shown on tv?

Like the last time, the US Open will be broadcast live on Eurosport. Starting August 26th at eleven o’clock there will be daily reports, the respective night sessions will start at 19 o’clock. At the time of the semi-final the matches will not take place as often and only later in the day. Further matches can be watched on Eurosport 2 or the Eurosport Player with costs.

Novak Djokovic und Naomi Osaka – the defending champions

Novak Djokovic managed to get his third title last year. He won against Juan Martin del Potro. But the women’s final will certainly go down in sports history. Serena Williams was beaten by Naomi Osaka. During the match, Williams fought with the referee, which even sparked a wide-ranging debate after the match.

Who is this year’s favourite?

Tennis legends such as Djokovic, Federer and Nadal will clearly be at the forefront. Nevertheless, players like Stefanos Tsitsipas or Kei Nishikori are also among the favourites. However, the German Alexander Zverev will be thrilled by his performance due to the previous coaching chaos. In the women’s singles, Serena Williams and the defending champions Naomi Osaka, Ash Barty and Simona Halep should not be overlooked.

The US Open will be as exciting as never before and the prize money has never been as high as this year. The men’s and women’s winners will go home with prize money of 3.85 million US dollars. But there will also be a consolation prize for the runners-up. They are entitled to a total of 1.9 million dollars. We are looking forward to an exciting tournament!
