The Red Bull X-Alps – the definition of true adventure

Since July 2nd the world’s toughest adventure race is taking place across the Alps. The eigth edition of the extraordinary event has been starting in the beautiful Salzburg, Austria and is continuing a straight-line distance of 1,138km across the Alps up to the finishing line in Monaco. In 2017 once more the exciting race is pushing its competitors to their limits.

Over the years Red Bull X-Alps has attracted more and more of the world’s top adventurers. This year 31 Athletes of 20 nationalities will race the distance of 1,138km across the Alps up to Monaco via seven turnpoints in 7 different countries. Beside excellent paragliding skills the Red Bull X-Alps demands from its athletes furthermore strategic thinking, tactical move and extreme endurance. Therefor some participants will hike over 100km a day and gain 1000m difference in height while flying.

 

No matter if the competitors travel by foot or with the paraglider, the exceptional journey through the impressive panorama of the Alps is monitored by advanced Live Tracking Technology and broadcasted to an audience of million viewers. In order to the permanently changing weather conditions, the racers from all over the world are pushed to their limits. For this reason it’s hardly possible to manage this challenge by their own. Each athlete has a personal supporter to help with the strategy, nutrition and everything in between. The role of this supporter is hugely important – among insiders they are truly the unsung heroes of this action race.

In 2015 of the 32 participating athletes 19 made the goal and this was a new record since the first edition in 2003. A incredible number of 12 newcomers crossed the finishing line Monaco that time. In the last edition in 2015 the Swiss athlete Chrigel Maurer won the Red Bull X-Alps race in a awesome time of 8 days, 4 hours and 37 minutes. This great performance was his fourth victory and at the same time a new record in the Red Bull X-Alps history. It’s gonna be quite exciting this year, because Maurer’s reign as Red Bull X-Alps champion could  come to an end in regard of excellent athletes like Sebastian Huber or Paul Guschlbauer. We can’t wait to see who will cross the finishing line of the Red Bull X-Alps first as the new champion 2017.
