A board and some waves are all it takes to surf? Not quite, there’s much more to the sport. We present you the best surf schools in Europe to learn the necessary know-how.

Jo Moraiz Surf School Biarritz, France

The Atlantic coast of France is perfectly suited for surfing, especially in Biarritz. Since the hosting of the first European Surf Championship, a lot of experienced surfers and beginners went to surf there. Founded by the French surfer who represented France in world championships throughout the sixties, the Surf School Jo Morraitz is one of the best at La Côte des Basques. Private lessons cost €100, group lesson €40. Also several-day courses and accomadation are available.

Lapoint Surfcamps, Portugal

The vibrant surf scene of the Portuguese fishing town of Ericeira as well as the Surf School Lapoint provide the best conditions for learning how to surf. João Durão, who began teaching at 19, ensures a lot of fun and high-quality instructions. A seven night break for €499 includes five lessons, accommodation, breakfast and yoga.

Go Surf, Lofoten Islands, Norway

Who won’t be to distracted by the astonishing landscape should take every opportunity to go surfing on the Lofoten Islands. South African Shannon Ainslie describes Unstad Bay as the most beautiful place he’s ever been to and decided to set up his surf house “Go Surf” to teach small groups. The house is only five minutes away from the beach and has a sauna for cold days. Four nights with three days of lessons, accommodation, breakfast and hiking are €442.

George’s Surf School, Cornwall, UK

George Stoy can be described as really passionate and owns a surf school in Polzeath in North Cornwall. He focuses on improving surfers’ confidence and making surfing accessible to everybody. That’s why he pioneers projects such as the Polzeath Ladies Surf Club, which has around 50 local women surfing together twice a week. A two day beginner course starts at €225, three and five day improver and advanced courses are also available. Private surf lesson cost €105.

Ben’s Surf Clinic, County Clare, Ireland

The relatively quiet seas at Ireland are a perfect fit for novice surfers. As one of the most qualified and experienced surf instructors in the country, Ben Bennett owns the successful “Surf Clinic” in Lahinch, County Clare. There you will also be able to enjoy a 2 km long beach and beautiful sunsets in summer. A weekend surf package including two lessons costs €100, group surf lesson €35.



A good surf school should provide qualified teachers, small groups and a lot of fun. Combine it with a mix of theory lessons and practice in the water, and you will ride the waves in no time!
