POPOYO – a true spot paradise

SPOTLIGHT

Along the pacific coast, Nicaragua offers some great spots to go surfing – and as soon you reached the Playa Popoyo, you no longer need to look for the perfect spot. Better said: there you have a variety of perfect spots right in front of you!

In general, Popoyo is a paradise for any kind of surfer. Whether you are a big wave surfer or a smooth longboard surfer, the spots will satisfy everyone!

The outer reef, also called “the beast” is not for anyone with weak nerves and demands quite  great surfing skills. Here, you will definitely face now or never decisions, where you will get punished for wrong decisions with hard wipe – or a long period under the water.

For great support and to be well equipped with the needed safety precautions, there are many surf schools and advisors that go out with their boats to provide help and support at any situation.

Another spot with higher waves and similar demanding conditions is called Manzanillo. You can only get there by boat. It is one of the most famous spots in the whole of Nicaragua and is definitely the trip worth – no matter whether you go surfing on your own or if you just enjoy to watch the others surf.

Anyone who likes it more relaxed, has the choice between A-Frame-Break and Beach-Break. Near the beach, you will find very long and not too small waves, depending on the season of course.
One should also mention the fact, that the atmosphere at the line-up of the spots that are close to the beach is quite relaxed and decent. If you are lucky, you will meet some guys of the higher semesters that come to these spots for years and really have what it takes to conquer the waves.

If you arrive from the South or the North, you will face the breathtaking nature scenery of Nicaragua on your way to Popoyo. Whether you see sprawling fields or typical gravel walks, the trip to Popoyo is definitely an adventure.
Some Restaurants and hotels at the beach offer parking spots including “guarded parking” for little money – Daily rates shall be between 2 to 4 dollars.

JOURNEY

The journey to Nicaragua is quite painstaking, if you want to keep the costs low. Multiple changes and transfers in Europe and America are required before you reach the paradise. From the airport in Managua you can take the bus to the pacific coast. If you want to rent a car, you should make sure that you have all required documents with you in order to avoid problems with the local police.

ALTERNATIVES

If the Playa Popoyo spot is completely crowded or if the weather conditions shouldn’t be satisfying, you will find many more spots along the pacific coast to the north or south direction. You can get there either by car or by shuttles provided by the surf schools.
