Island InspiredBySports

Soccer isn’t the only thing beloved in Iceland, the island of fire and ice also offers action packed adventures for both young and old!

You plan on going to a trip to Iceland but you have no idea wich route really pays off? We, Yngve and Inga off the InspiredBySports-Team, Took a closer look at the unique Island located at the Polar Circle and drove around it on the Ringroad with a 4×4.

In a small collection of articles, this being the first, i´m going to present our route to you and i will give you the most important tipps for your next Iceland vacation.

Before we start: Iceland isn`t exactly the place for people who enjoy good weather and relaxing at a beach.

Reykjavik

We started our journey in Reykjavik, Icelands capitol. 2/3 of Icelands  population lives in Reykjavik. The islands urban center seems dilapidated at first, but it holds its very own charm.

Reykjavik has been inhabited since the year 877, but saw her high times over the course of

The second world war. Numberous soldiers were stationed back then by the USA and decisivly formed the infrastructur. The town is well known for it’s colourfull Downtown, lot’s of art and a few Museums. But like most of all InspiredBySports-People, that love the nature and are in search for action-packed vacation should’nt stay too long in Reykjavik – there’s a lot more to discover outside the city walls!

Reykholt

After our luggage is safely stored at the airport and we’ve gotten our hand on new rain gear, we headed north. we recommend the road along the water. Save the money for the ferry and drive along the coast on the ringroad – there are great climbing- and hiking opportunities as well as stunning waterfalls to astonish yourself with.

On the way to Reykholt and inside Reykholt itself, we were blown away: The ground was smoking everywhere. The reason for this beeing the so called hot Springs. Here, geothermal heated groundwater escapes the surface. The overheated water comes from magma filled chambers and is steaming hot.

Hvammstangi

After we climbed a waterfall and wandered around outdoors a bit, we decided to drive near the area around Hvammstangi. We quickly booked an accommodation over airbnb, where we had the opportunity to sleep on a farm in the  middle of nowhere – „Iceland full on“.A great thing to do if you planned your trip quite rough. But such spontaneity is admittetly only possible in the north, beacause the south is mostly booked up during the saison.

But more to this topic in a later issue.
