Triathletes Anne Haug and Jan Frodeno make history at the world’s toughest race, the Ironman Hawaii. No one on Hawaii has ever been as fast as Frodeno.

The Ironman in Hawaii is a huge race. But what makes the race so extreme? A triathlon shouldn’t be underestimated : 3.86 kilometres swimming, 180.2 kilometres cycling and 42.2 kilometres running. The Ironman in Hawaii also has a variable that should be thought of: extreme natural conditions. The athletes are exposed to unpredictable winds, temperatures of over 30 degrees Celsius and extreme humidity. Due to the extreme conditions on the volcano island, even spectators are not allowed on most sections of the route.

Frodenos fairy tale

And exactly from this side the island should show itself again this year. Due to the strong waves, it was already assumed that distance records could be ruled out this year. Jan Frodeno was not deterred by this and showed top performances on all sections of the course. This was rewarded with a victory in all disciplines. And what a victory: With your third title, you could even beat the track record you set last year. After Frodenos injury bad luck in the last few years, even more triathlon fans should be proud of the athlete from Cologne.

Haug wins as first German woman on Hawaii

Third last year, this year at the top. And again, much seemed to indicate that Anne Haug would once again be denied victory. She was eight minutes behind the British Lucy Charles-Barclay, fought her step by step and in the end she was the first German woman ever to win the Ironman in Hawaii.

Disappointment for Pattrick Lange

One man’s happiness is another man’s sorrow. For the German Patrick Lange this proverb might be particularly true. Last year, winning and setting a new track record was not a good thing for him at this year’s race. He already had to get off his bike with fever, dizzy spells and darkness in front of his eyes.

For the German triathlon sport the double victory is of course a great advertisement. The Ironman was broadcasted live on ARD. Maybe one or the other could be inspired for the sport.
