Golf is a passionate hobby for some. What seems too static for many is just the right amount of exercise for others. But how suitable is the sport for winter?

Normally, the golfers already leave the lawn when temperatures drop and look for a warm place in the clubhouse. But according to the motto “When the going gets tough, the though get going”, the passionate golfers from Switzerland don’t know bad weather conditions and gather on the golf course even in winter. But how effective is it to actually play golf in winter?

What’s Ice Golfing?

Ice golf is nothing else than golfing – only in the cold winter. Normally, golf is more associated with wide green fields and sunny weather. But there is always another side. Nevertheless, both sports have things in common. No matter how the weather conditions are, both take place outdoors in the nature.

Where and when does one play it?

As the name suggests, the season of ice golfers is in winter. In the mostly rainy autumn, the conditions are anything but suitable for the one game of golf. Playing in a hall is also not optimal, because the course is not flexible enough.

The players are in nature and can still enjoy the scenery during this time. The great thing about this type of golf is that the meadow is not the only playable place. Besides the large grass, frozen lakes and even glacier landscapes are also good places.

What are the rules?

As in normal golf, the rules are obvious and easy to follow. In most cases, the snow or ice areas have nine holes to play.

Golf vs Ice Golfing

Ice golf is not very different from the normal variant. The important thing here is to pay attention to the color of the balls. In ice golf, golf balls in bright and radiant colors are desirable, because the white balls fade in the snow and thus submerge and disappear.

Otherwise there are no extra rules. The one who has the least strokes when putting in, wins.

Is Ice Golfing an expensive sport?

As with normal golf, you first need good equipment. That’s not always cheap. Of course, it also depends on the frequency of you exercising golf. A golf membership is therefore not entirely cheap, but there are definitely inexpensive alternatives.

Statement

Ice golf is really a sport with a high fun factor. The one thing that must not be missing, of course, are the sturdy shoes and gloves. Get out your best winter clothes and give this kind of sport a chance.
