Gramais: a paradies on earth

The smallest community in Austria: The most think about something like an alp village with old farmhouses. Submontane of hay fields and rocks, in the middle of the wild natur. And so it is.
Not only the “50 souls“ of the smallest independent community of Austria appreciate to live in this cultivatet landscape with deep roots in farming and may live and work in the middle of this lush fauna and flora.
The mountain village is for visitors like a huge kingdom with ways, rocks, waterfalls and places of power. The nine kilometers long, contorted and tight mountain road, which is the only driveway to the valley of Gramais, is a symbol for leaving the comfort zone of the western world and the immersion in the experience of the simplicity and originality, which got lost in many cases.
The valley head spread like a fan into ten cirques and high valleys, which invite for mountaineering, hiking or climbing. Gramais is starting point for many hut-tours, climbing areas and the popular ridgeway of the Lechtal.
But what does it mean to live in the tinies community of Austria? Mayor, municipal council, fire brigade, mountain rescue, tourism association, guesthouse, four active farms and – since 2014 – an own mountaineering school with extensive alpine Tours and education offer. Just organized and managed by 50 people.
That is reality in Gramais. The people living there knowing to value all this. So the life in Gramais is a privilege. And to protect this privilege there is one clear order no one in Gramais will forget: Community and solidarity. The knowing that only togetherness makes it possible to live in and with these forces of nature. An order Gramais is giving to his guests. Not only golden eagles, ibexes, deer and marmots, showing regularly their existence in accordance with the humans, are symbols for this integrated kind of living. In Gramais there are not only torrents and waterfalls flowing. As a “Timeout-Village” the people of Gramais try to go one way where the flow of life is the most important thing. Power and Yoga areas, meditation and movement, tension and relaxation. The energy flows, in Gramais.
