The golf season of 2017 is over and there is a lot of time left till the next one starts. Winter means little daylight, cold fingers, thick clothes and often a lack of motivation for doing sports. These are not the best prerequisites for golf. But still, there is no reason to stop playing golf during winter. InspiredBySports explains how to have fun on the pitch even in the freezing cold and introduces some indoor alternatives.

On the golf court

You should do a warm-up before every sports, but it’s especially important when doing outdoor sports in winter. This is due to the fact that cold muscles are more prone for injuries. So take at least 15 minutes before starting golfing.

There is no wrong weather, only wrong clothes – Who has not heard this sentence at least a thousand times? It is true for sure, but finding the right clothes for golfing in winter is not that easy: Too many layers of clothing limit the ability to move, which is fatal in the implementation of the perfect swing. That’s why you have to wear special functional clothing that is thin but still warm. Another problem when playing golf in the cold are stiff fingers. To prevent this you should buy golf gloves. Pay particular attention to proper grip.

During winter you also have to be flexible regarding the equipment, as many driving ranges prohibit the use of all kinds of trolleys during wet-cold weather. That means you have to switch to a carrying bag. If you do not want to lose all of your strength while dragging, you should leave some clubs at home. Then you might not have the right iron for every length, but you can show creativity while golfing. If weather is really bad, you should also bring a sling towel to clean the ball.

Those who lack the motivation to leave the house during the cold season should train in good company. A golf date with friends gives you the right incentive to train. If that’s not enough, use winter time to further develop your skills and book professional coaching lessons. You will hardly cancel those. And the icing on the cake: In winter, these are often cheaper!

Alternatives to the driving range

Even those who really don’t want to go outside can train golf. We tell you how:

Indoor golf halls

Most large cities such as Berlin, Hamburg or Munich but also Nuremberg offer the opportunity to train in indoor halls. The golf halls usually open in November – so let’s go!

Practicing Putting

You do not have to be on a golf court to practice putting. You can even do that in your own living room. All you need is a putting mat, for example the Best Track Putting Mat by BEST SERVICE Company. With a length of 3 meters you can practice both long putts and the so-called calf biters as well. A freely positionable putting hole and artificial obstacles in the form of foam wedges increase the difficulty and optimally prepare you for the new season. And again, it’s even more fun when doing this in form of a competition together with some friends!

Practicing Chipping

Besides putting, you can also train chipping. You can do this indoors as well, although it requires a little more space. All you need is a chipping net. To have more fun and get better training results, you should take a a more expensive model with multiple target circles in different heights and of different sizes. A hitting mat is also advisable.

Thai Chi Golf

If you want to improve your swing technique, you should try Tai Chi Golf. The exercise is inspired by the flow of movement and speed of Asian martial arts. This means you perform the momentum under highest concentration in slow motion. As a result, one perceives small aspects of movement that go unnoticed during normal golfing. In particular, if you have an observer who gives you feedback, you can optimally refine your technique. Professional players like Fabian Bünker also praise this kind of technical training.

Statement

There are no more excuses! If you really want to train golf, then you cannot be stopped by winter. So grab your irons and go!
