Golf – a game for young and old?

Golf, a sport for young and old? Of course!

LEVEL: BEGINNER

Little Hannah leeched shyly on her mother’s leg. No High-Five for me… This tall man with his bag and those strange long sticks inside just must have looked really awkward for her. Her face just lightened up when she got her first own golf racket. A tailored one, not even longer than a tennis racket in glowing orange.

And so her golf-beginner-course started at the court of Deichgrafenhofen, together with her family and other curious golf fans.

After one hour and around 50 balls I once again stood infront of this little girl. Smiling and with pure enthusiasm she looked up to me and stroke her last ball at the driving-range. Even before the ball stopped to move one could see the pure euphoria and joy in her face.

This is a phenomenon which you can observe with many people. Adults just don’t leech at their parent’s legs but in fact there is an aversion around them before their first course, you can also call it shyness, which comes more from the prejudices about golf as a sport. The experience of a beginner-course in golf just puts a spell on young and old people.

It’s this feeling to strike the ball cleanly. To see the ball fly. To gaze after the ball. This distinctive sound. For many people, this is the moment in which they fall in love with this game or even don’t. But in the first course, it isn’t about turning beginners into a passionate golfer. Because of those many prejudices, it’s just about breaking some barriers. Golf is elitist and only for old people and so on. We all know those prejudices.

We want to show the opposite in our beginner-courses. We take the guests on a trip into the world of this sport and report it’s history. And we give everyone the opportunity to strike the little ball into the platform of Eiderstedt. Hopefully with the described feeling when hitting the ball. Everytime with a huge wink and not too much seriousness.

And then, scepticism and shyness turn very fast into joy. It brings with it the perception that this sport isn’t about elitism and a game for everyone. At least in Tating, where anyone can touch-and-go at the court. Hannah was truly happy and that’s what it is about – have fun playing golf!

In the end there was a huge high five for little Hannah…
