After the Christmas break and a mixed start of the season, the German winter sports athletes were able to celebrate some successes last weekend. With a look ahead to the Olympic Games in February, it was not only the athletes who felt positive.

Last weekend, especially the winter sports fans got their money’s worth. In addition to the usual routiniers, one or the other underdog also provided a surprise last weekend. So that you know exactly what we are talking about, we have summarized the highlights of the last weekend for you.

Alpine skiing convinces all the tracks

Already on Tuesday night, Lena Dürr initiated the medal weekend for the German winter athletes with her speedy run in the night slalom in Schladming. Only the American Mikaela Shiffrin and Slovakian Petra Vlhova topped Lena Dürr’s time. On Saturday, Kira Weidle also proved that the German Alpine Ski Team is still a force to be reckoned with and finished second in a faultless race.

German biathletes benefit from their home advantage

After a rather unsuccessful home weekend in Oberhof, the German biathletes used their second chance. They were able to leave the event with beaming faces, especially in the men’s race. Benedikt Doll made a statement against all doubts about his season form. He showed himself with silver in the mass start in a good running. As well as his shooting form shortly before the Olympics. Sixth place was achieved by his compatriot Erik Lesser.

The success course of the German men continued on Saturday. In relay Benedikt Doll, Erik Lesser, Roman Rees and Philipp Nawrath delivered an exciting race and finished second.

In Sunday’s pursuit Erik Lesser was the best German with sixth place and just missed the podium. Due to a mistake in the last shooting.

The German women’s quartet of Denise Herrmann, Franziska Hildebrand, Vanessa Voigt and Vanessa Hinz was not very lucky in the relay race and just failed to reach the podium with a fourth place.

Leap onto the podium

In the Mecca of ski jumping, in Zakopane, the German eagles flew to silver metal. After an unfortunate 6th place in Bischofshofen the previous weekend. This weekend the DSV selection shone with a good team performance resulting in a second place in the team competition. Team Germany was represented by Karl Geiger, Markus Eisenbichler, Severin Freud and Stefan Leyhe. Also in the individual competition the wind was on the side of the Germans. Karl Geiger reached the second place with a great jump.

Fast sledges in the ice channel

If there is one discipline in which German winter athletes consistently deliver their best performances, it is luge. In both the women’s and men’s disciplines, the German athletes are in top form and enter the race as favorites for the World Cup as well as the Olympic victory. This is also the case at the World Cup in Oberhof.

Although Julia Taubitz only finished the race in second place. She still keeps the yellow jersey of the World Cup leader in her custody. In the men’s singles, Johannes Ludwig took his first World Cup victory from Thuringiawhich. He did not let anyone take away from him on his home track.

Equally successful were his compatriots Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken. After somewhat weaker performances before, they were able to resume their top performances. The crowning glory of the weekend was the victory in the relay on Sunday.

Until the Olympics in February, there is one more World Cup stop on the schedule for most sports. At the same time, this means another chance for some to secure the Olympic standard. For the next weekend we wish all athletes good luck and hope for further medals.
