Eighteen baskets on top of a former landfill, clear view of the Alps, no entry fee. Five years ago, on a Saturday afternoon you might have spotted two groups up there. Today five teams routinely wait at basket one for tee-off. Berlin has six installations spread across the city, Hamburg another six. Lower Saxony counts 31, North Rhine-Westphalia roughly 45.

The numbers come from the public directory at trendsport.info and largely match the course map of the German Frisbee Sport Association. More telling than the absolute count is the distribution. Disc golf is no longer just a big-city phenomenon. Mid-sized cities like Bamberg, Freiburg or Trier have their own courses. You no longer need to drive to the Netherlands to find a serious round.

214+

Courses in Germany 2026

86 %

Player growth worldwide since 2020 (UDisc)

119

DDV tournaments in qualification cycle 25/26

The UDisc Growth Report 2026 lists 17,287 courses in 99 countries. Three new installations per day worldwide, for six years running. Iceland leads with one public course per 4,500 inhabitants. Germany sits in the international midfield but is catching up visibly. Right now is the window where you can still find space for yourself on a course and at the same time meet a real scene structure. In three years that picture will look different.

How a round works – explained in ten minutes

You play on a fixed course of usually nine or eighteen holes. Each hole has a throwing point – the tee – and a basket at the end. Your goal: get from tee to basket in as few throws as possible. The player with the lowest total throw count across all holes wins. Same as classic golf, only with discs instead of balls and steel baskets instead of holes.

Distances are manageable. A hole is between 40 and 150 metres long, some pro holes stretch beyond 200. You do not just chuck forward. You aim through trees, compensate on slopes, calculate wind. Three throw types are enough to start: putter from close range, midrange for the approach, driver for distance. Anyone who throws all three cleanly will be playing well after three weeks. Anyone who practices only the driver frustrates himself.

There is no tee time, no fee, no dress code. You start when you want. You only wait at the tee if another group is ahead of you. Quiet courtesy between players is the norm. If you are searching for a lost disc, strangers will come and help. That is not friendly marketing, that is scene culture.

The map of the German-speaking region: where the scene has really grown thick

North Rhine-Westphalia leads by a clear margin. Roughly 45 installations from the Lower Rhine to the Sauerland, many of them in municipal parks. Together with Bavaria (around 30), Baden-Württemberg and Lower Saxony (about 25 each), the top four federal states already cover more than half of the 214 courses. The rest is distributed across the remaining states, with Saxony as the strongest catch-up region in the east. There is a reason for this: disc golf needs little infrastructure. Set baskets in the ground, mark the paths, done. Municipalities have noticed that an installation costs under 30,000 euros and stays publicly usable for decades. Compared to ball sport halls, that is a fraction of the operating cost.

Bavaria’s hotspots are the greater Munich area, Franconia and the Bavarian Forest. NRW combines urban park courses in the Ruhr region with wooded layouts in the Sauerland. Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are slowly expanding. The weakest region remains Saarland with a single-digit number of installations.

If you want the German top courses, look at Sigmaringen (premium course at the edge of the Swabian Alb), Kreuzbergpark in Bonn (close to the city, 18 baskets, dense vegetation as difficulty) and the Bremen-Stadtwerder installation (flat, ideal for beginners). Across the border, Innsbruck-Rossau in Austria and Aire-la-Ville near Geneva in Switzerland are worth the trip. For more options, UDisc Courses offers the largest database, including ratings.

What you need – and what you really do not

Three discs are the minimum, three discs are also enough for the first year. A beginner set of putter, midrange and driver costs between 35 and 50 euros at specialist retailers like Frisbeeshop.com, Discgolf4you or directly at some courses. Brands you can trust at the beginning: Discmania, Innova, Latitude 64. Plastic mixes are a matter of taste and frankly irrelevant for the first months.

Shoes: whatever you already have in the closet. Trail runners are ideal because many courses cross forest soil, gravel and damp meadows. If you are still looking for the right shoes, our release overview of trail shoes 2026 lists sensible options under 150 euros. Backpack? You will only need one once you carry more than six discs. Until then, a cloth bag is enough.

What you do not need: expensive specialty apparel, a PDGA membership (that is the international tournament body, irrelevant for casual play), a competition class rating. You can ignore the entire marketplace of bag carts, GPS watches and throwing bands for a full year. Real players will tell you: less equipment, more repetition. That is the lever.

Tip from personal experience: Do not buy your first disc online. Walk into a specialist store or join an open practice workshop on a weekend. The disc has to sit in your hand like a tool. Too big or too heavy and you unlearn your throwing technique before the first proper tee. Discmania and Discraft offer models from 145 grams, and most beginners do significantly better with those than with the 175-gram standard drivers.

Three traps that always catch beginners

The first trap is driver tunnel vision. You arrive at the course, want to throw far, swing with full force – and the disc curves sideways into the next bush. Distance in disc golf does not come from power, it comes from timing and hip motion. Whoever plays only with midrange and putter in the first two weeks learns the throw mechanics cleanly. The driver comes later, around the third month.

The second trap is wanting to improve too fast. Disc golf is slow. You need six months before your own throw stops feeling like a beginner’s. This is not a rucking shortcut that delivers first adaptations after two weeks. Whoever gets frustrated too early gives up. Whoever accepts that the learning curve is flat sticks with it and notices after a year that he is suddenly more precise than most people on the course.

The third trap is the solo round. Being alone outside is meditative, no question. But the scene lives off small groups. You learn ten times faster when you play with others. Disc golf for beginners covers the basics, but the actual skill jump happens when someone tells you: your shoulder start is a second too early. You will not see that yourself. Go to an open round. DDV clubs run them almost everywhere on weekends. An estimated 90 percent of all disc golfers started that way.

Cool-down

Click on a question to open the answer.

<details style="margin:0 !important;padding:0 !important;border-bottom:1px solid rgba(0,212,212,0.15);background:transparent !important;">

Do I need a disc golf association membership to play public courses?

No. The vast majority of courses in Germany are publicly accessible and free, with no registration.
