Dead Hang opens up the shoulder, but doesn’t build much muscle itself.

▸ Getting started: 3x 10 seconds with feet on the ground. After two weeks, hang fully. Patience is the only challenge.

What Dead Hang really is and why so many get it wrong

Dead Hang means: you hang passively from a bar. Shoulder height doesn’t matter, shoulder girdle relaxed, arms extended, shoulders pulled up towards your ears. No pull-ups. No activation. Nothing. You breathe and wait until the time is up.

It’s precisely this doing-nothing that’s the trick. Most people think of active hanging with tense latissimus when it comes to hanging exercises. That’s a different exercise and is called Active Hang. Useful, but not what your shoulder needs when it’s stiff and creaks when reaching overhead. Passive hanging stretches the joint capsule, gives the acromion space, and loosens adhesions in the rotator cuff.

John Kirsch, a shoulder orthopedist from California, has documented this in his clinical practice. 92 patients with impingement diagnosis, all scheduled for surgery. He gave them one exercise to take home: hang daily, initially 10 seconds, later up to two minutes. 90 percent avoided surgery. His book Shoulder Pain? The Solution & Prevention is a bestseller among orthopedists, even though he never conducted a double-blind study. Anecdotal, but consistent.

What grip strength has to do with your life expectancy

Here’s where it gets interesting. In 2015, The Lancet published the PURE study with 139,691 participants from 17 countries. For every 5 kilograms less of hand strength, overall mortality increased by 16 percent. Stroke risk rose by 9 percent, and heart attack risk by 7 percent. Grip strength was a more precise predictor than systolic blood pressure.

You don’t build grip strength with bicep curls. You build it by holding something heavy. A bar with your body weight pulling on it is exactly that. Students at a Japanese sports university improved their grip strength by 18 percent in eight weeks with dead hangs alone, without additional strength training.

This doesn’t mean you’ll immediately live to be 90 just because you’re hanging from a bar. But it does mean that one exercise can tackle two problems that would otherwise be separate in your training plan.

The only equipment question you need to answer

Doorframe bar or outdoor pull-up bar. There aren’t many more options. The door bar clamps between the wooden frames, holds 100 kilos with proper installation, and costs between 18 and 35 Euro. The brand doesn’t matter much; Pull-Up-Mate, ProForm, Sportstech – they’re all the same. What’s important is a lever mechanism with hard rubber pads, not a screw variant. Screw models leave marks on the frame, and you’ll never want to take them down again.

You need an outdoor bar if your ceiling is too high (over 2.40 meters) or your rental agreement doesn’t allow door bars. A simple single-joint rack for digging into the ground is available at Decathlon for 55 Euro. If you have a tree with a horizontal branch under two meters high, congratulations – you don’t need any equipment.

What you don’t need: liquid chalk, grip aids, hand wraps. Certainly not a smart bar with an app connection. It exists, costs 180 Euro, and measures how long you hang. Your phone with a timer function can do that too.

Your first month: what you can really expect

    Week 1: Ground Hang

3x 10 seconds. SLAP lesion with active symptoms. Fresh bicep tendon rupture. For these diagnoses, please consult a physiotherapist first, not TikTok. Lumbar disc herniation is not an exclusion criterion, but be cautious when getting down, no jerking.

What isn’t a hindrance: occasional tension, mouse arm, the infamous computer neck, mild impingement, shoulder clicking without pain. All of these tend to improve with daily passive hanging, not worsen. Feeling a slight pull in your shoulder blade during the first two weeks is normal. It’s not actual pain.

Why this exercise is relevant now

It’s not new; it’s been around since humans started climbing. What’s changed is everything else. We sit more, push our shoulders forward, type all day, and perform movements that flatter the chest while neglecting the back. Mobility coaches like Ido Portal, Frans Bosch, or the GMB Fitness community have been preaching for years: hanging is the missing fundamental movement of modern life.

You don’t need to read about it.
