If you’re a semi-pro cyclist aiming to hold 280 watts in hour four, it matters to you. You log long, steady sessions plus targeted intervals in a fatigued state. For everyone else, it’s a niche.

What works as a broadly applicable thesis: the idea that not every session needs to be pushed to the max. Zone 2 work, weighted long walks, mobility drills, real strength-training progressions instead of frantic circuits—these methods deliver. Yet they’ve been known for years and don’t need a fresh label.

Where things get murky: whenever someone tells you HIIT is now obsolete, raise an eyebrow. HIIT is a training modality with a solid evidence base. It doesn’t fit every goal or every phase of the season, but it isn’t replaced by a term nobody can define cleanly.

The flaw in popular articles is rarely that they’re outright wrong; it’s that they blend what’s clearly outlined in elite-sport literature with the expectations of amateur athletes or people who simply want to lose a few kilos. The honest answer would differ for all three groups. “Functional Durability” as a headline erases those distinctions.

One more point rarely mentioned: the athletes who actually work on durability in real performance sport don’t take the buzzword half as seriously as the apps selling it. To them, it’s a specific training block in the annual plan—usually after a build phase—governed by clear load protocols. But you’ll also need a coach—not just a feed.

If you train three times a week to stay fit, the term changes nothing. Two sessions with weights, one or two Zone 2 sessions, plus an occasional harder effort if you feel like it, and mobility work if you get to it. That was right before the trend and it remains right after.

What you can take away instead: the reminder that harder isn’t automatically better. And that you’re allowed to structure an entire training season, not just the next 45 minutes. It’s an old insight in new wrapping paper—feel free to toss the paper.

If you want to dig deeper, start with Zone 2 fundamentals (see our guide), add a strength base (kettlebell intro), and keep the rest sober.

Quick test before you download another app: write down what should change in your training if you start durability training tomorrow. If the list looks like sensible training plus a little extra volume in Zone 2, you don’t need the app. If the list contains lines like “the app tells me if I’m ready,” train for at least three months without tracking and see what your body tells you. That’s not anti-tech; it’s sparring-partner logic. Technology should amplify your attention, not replace it.

A word on the pro coaches behind this wave: the best trainers I know almost never use the word. They talk about load capacity over the long haul, seasonal blocks, running and cycling volumes. Durability is a technical term for a specific metric, not the title of a Pinterest board. When the word gets louder in marketing than in practice, it usually reveals not the training standard but the department it came from.

This article hasn’t made me any wiser on what “functional durability” actually means. But I now understand why the term is working: it sounds like a solution in a feed full of problems. That’s one reason it’s spreading. Not a reason to believe it.

One last point, because it bothers me most: many of these pieces sell caution as progress. They repackage what older coaches have preached for decades as a counter-revolution to HIIT and call it new. That’s not only imprecise; it devalues the reading comprehension of the people who take it seriously. You can write honestly about training without renaming everything. And you’re allowed to admit when a research evening leaves you less certain than you started. I am.
