The Biggest Surprises<\/strong><\/h2>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” text_align=”left” background_animation=”none” css_animation=””][vc_column][vc_row_inner row_type=”row” type=”full_width” use_row_as_full_screen_section_slide=”no” text_align=”left” css_animation=””][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][vc_column_text]From day one, the Olympic Games never fail to captivate the masses. <\/span>One of the first gold medals went to Australia, as freestyle skier <\/span>Jakara<\/span> Anthony secured the country\u2019s first medal in Beijing. <\/span>But perhaps the most heartwarming Olympic story came from Swedish speed skating star Nils van der Poel. <\/span>The 25-year-old triumphed over his Dutch rival in the 5,000m event, dedicating his gold medal to a very special person: his mother, who passed away from cancer. <\/span> <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][vc_column_text]For German fans, Denise Herrmann and Vinzenz Geiger set hearts racing. <\/span>Few expected biathlete Denise Herrmann to claim gold – while she often trails behind favorites in the World Cup, she proved her world-class form in the 15km race. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][vc_column_text]In contrast, Nordic combined athlete Vinzenz Geiger was already a favorite heading into the Games. The absence of his Norwegian rival, Jarl Magnus <\/span>Riiber<\/span>, only boosted his medal chances. Despite a poor showing in the ski jump – landing in 11th place – Geiger fought his way to the top. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″][vc_empty_space height=”15″][vc_column_text]\n
